How do I find my towed car in Fresno?

• Parked on a city street or pulled over inside Fresno? Police-ordered tows are logged at findmytowedcar.org/fresno, the city's official lookup. You pay and collect at the tow yard, not the police station, and the car must be currently registered to release.
• Unincorporated county pocket? Fresno has county islands and edges where the sheriff, not FPD, orders tows. Dispatch at (559) 600-3111 can check.
• Apartment lot, shopping center, private driveway? That's a private-property tow under CVC 22658. The lot's sign must name the tow company and its number. No compliant sign is itself a problem, for them: see the illegal-tow guide.
• Broke down on 99, 41, 168, or 180 and left the car? CHP rotation tows come off the CHP's contracted list. Call the CHP Fresno Area office and have your plate ready.

The 30-day hold, and the 10-day window that beats it

Cars towed for unlicensed or suspended-licence driving get a 30-day impound, and storage accrues every single day of it. California gives you a counter: request a post-storage hearing. Fresno PD's published instruction is to contact the Tow Coordinator at (559) 621-2543 within the first ten days for a hearing to release the vehicle before the 30 days are up. The same number reaches the Tow Hearing Officer if you want to dispute the impound itself. The hearing costs nothing. Thirty days of storage does not.

Getting the car out, step by step

• Go to the tow yard, not the police station. Fresno PD no longer releases vehicles at the department. You will be given the tow company's name and number; call them for their payment policy before driving over.
• The vehicle must be currently registered. No current registration, no release. Handle DMV first if you have to.
• It is released only to the licensed registered or legal owner. If the registered owner has no valid licence, they need a California ID card (or other acceptable ID) and must be accompanied by a licensed driver. With the owner's consent, another licensed driver can be authorised instead.
• Ask for the itemised sheet. Police administrative fee, tow, daily storage, gate fees. You are entitled to see the math.
• Photograph the car at the yard before you drive off and flag new damage on the spot.

Towed, or actually stolen?

If none of the four authorities above has a record of your vehicle, it may genuinely be stolen. Fresno PD takes stolen-vehicle reports through its Communications Center at (559) 621-7000. Have the plate or VIN ready: without one of those, the department cannot run the search. If you don't know either, check the pink slip, a repair receipt, or your insurance paperwork before calling. And if the car was financed and you've missed payments, call your lender first, because repossession looks exactly like theft from the curb.

The 72-hour rule that catches people out

An unattended vehicle parked on a public street in Fresno can be impounded as abandoned after 72 hours without moving. This gets project cars, second vehicles, and anyone who leaves a car parked while travelling. If you have a Certificate of Non-Operation on a vehicle, keep it off the public street entirely. Moving the car around the corner every couple of days is the cheap fix.
