Does Insurance Cover Towing? A Fresno Driver's Answer

Every week someone in Fresno pays cash for a tow their policy would have reimbursed. The coverage hides under names nobody searches for. Here's the map.

The four places towing coverage hides

• Your auto policy's roadside rider. Sold as "towing and labor" or "roadside assistance," costs $10–$30 a year, and most people forget they added it. Look at your declarations page, not your card.
• Collision/comprehensive claims. Accident tow to the shop rides along with the damage claim. Fresno's fog-season pileups on 99 generate exactly these claims every winter; keep the tow receipt with the body-shop paperwork.
• Credit cards. Several Visa Signature and Mastercard tiers include roadside dispatch or reimbursement. It's in the benefits guide you never read, and it works in Fresno like anywhere.
• Memberships. AAA is the obvious one. Less obvious: some phone plans and warranty programs bundle towing. Stack check before you pay.

Reimbursement vs. dispatch, and why it matters at 11 p.m.

Two models. Dispatch coverage (AAA, insurer hotlines) sends their contracted truck; in Fresno that can mean waiting for a driver routed from another city on a busy night. Reimbursement coverage lets you call anyone, pay, and submit the receipt. If your coverage reimburses, you can call a local truck directly, get moving in one call, and file the receipt tomorrow. Know which model you have before the night you need it.

What insurance won't cover

• Impound and police-ordered tows. The administrative fee plus tow and storage from a city impound is yours; see the impound guide for the ways to shrink it.
• Private-property tows. Not covered, though an illegal one can be recovered from the property owner under CVC 22658.
• Second tows. Most riders cover one tow per incident. Shop-hopping is on you; pick the destination once. The cost guide helps you budget the uncovered cases.

The CHP rotation wrinkle

Break down on 99, 41, 168, or 180 and CHP will send the next truck on its rotation list if you don't arrange your own. Rotation operators are vetted (training, drug-testing, inspections under the CHP's Tow Service Agreement), but the rate is the rate and the destination is often a yard, not your mechanic.
